Andre Ayew becomes West Ham United’s record buy

Twenty-six-year-old forward has scored at four major international tournaments

Ghana star has been an impressive performer for both Olympique Marseille and Swansea City

West Ham United are delighted to confirm the transfer of outstanding Ghana forward Andre Ayew for a Club-record £20.5million fee.

The versatile striker, winger or attacking midfielder joins the Hammers on a three-year contract, with an additional two-year option, on the back of an exceptional debut Premier League season with Swansea City.

Boasting an equally impressive spell at Marseille on his CV, where he played alongside Dimitri Payet, along with goals at four major international tournaments for the Black Stars, the 26-year-old is now set to shine on the London Stadium stage.

He said: “I am very proud and happy to be at this magnificent Club. I am happy to be playing for these fans and I hope to make the people very happy here.

“The Club have a lot of ambition and have a great manager. They want to become a bigger Club every year and with the new Stadium and a new training ground, you can feel they are moving onto another level and I want to be part of this project.

“I want to train hard, do my job and show that I deserve to play for West Ham United. I want to give back to the manager and the fans the confidence they are showing me.”

Born in Seclin, northern France, in December 1989, Ayew had spells in Germany and Ghana as a youngster before making his professional breakthrough at Marseille – the same club that his father Abedi Pele starred for in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

He debuted for Marseille in 2007, and after spending time on loan with Lorient and Arles-Avignon, established himself as a regular on the scoresheet at Stade Velodrome from 2010 onwards.

In all, he scored 60 goals in 202 games for L’OM, many of them assisted by Payet, winning the Coupe de la Ligue and the Trophee des Champions twice apiece during his time in France.

An impressive 16 goals in 2011/12 included four in just nine European appearances and he has hit double figures in five of his last six campaigns.

Included in that is his impressive Premier League bow, where he scored at a rate of better than one every three games for the Swans, with his goals steering the Welsh club away from danger and to another year of Premier League safety.

Internationally Ayew has enjoyed great success, featuring for Ghana in four major tournaments – and scoring in all four.

He netted twice at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and followed that with three goals at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations to claim that tournament’s Golden Boot.

A two-time Africa Cup of Nations runner-up and FIFA U20 World Cup winner, Ayew has scored eleven goals in 67 senior caps for the Black Stars.

It's a funny thing money. It's all about perception.
Ayew is a good player and injuries happen but it does make you think... a decent right back is far cheaper than a forward. Why not buy one and put Antonio in the Ayew position?

Or is Moses really worse than Tore and Fagouli?Moses has a lot of 1st team experience, was his salary that much more than taking risks on Turkish league guys?

Is Nordvelt better than Song? Is Song that expensive that its worth risking someone who might not work here?

Surely keeping Tomkins as a right back was the cheapest option of all if you think Byram isnt ready?

It feels like it would have been cheaper and better to just keep last seasons team. All we really needed was a replacement for Sahko / Valencia this season (which we might have in Callieri).

I'm not sure we've done any good business at all.

(oh yeah I forgot, Arthur is good, thats a plus point. We never had cover for Cresswell before so its a good buy).

Get Sakho back firing.

Front 5 of Carroll, Sakho, Valencia, Calleri and Fletcher may do it.

A Bony or a Benteke now would be good though

I see Liverpool's Mane is injured now. He'll probably need a leg replacement, but I bet he's only out for four days rather than 4 months.

CurSED.

Come back Sakho all is forgiven.

And we STILL need a striker.

Re: Andre Ayew Out for 4 months
Not a fan of all this 'just our luck' business. Yes we do have bad luck, so do other teams. Maybe not to the extent of losing your record signing 10 minutes in to the first game for 4 months but none the less, we did alright without him last year and providing the right players are played in the right positions and everyone pulls together then there's no reason why he'll be a major loss.

Guess the biggest loss is the fact that we've now spent 20 mill on a player we can't use. If it's true that we've stopped spending then it means we won't be replacing him or reinforcing any other part of the squad. If you ask me, we need to sign a proper right back, get the cheque book out and splash some dough and put Antonio back where he belongs on the wing.

Other than Byram we don't have a regular first team right back. It cannot be more blatantly obvious that this is the part of the squad that we need to reinforce. No more wingers for god sake.

Re: Andre Ayew Out for 4 months
Even before he got injured we still needed a striker. We have cover at RW (it's been rumoured that our current right back could maybe do a job there), so if you're gonna get an injury, then that's the position to get it in.

It's the curse of the Boleyn........... Oh.

Seriously though, got to agree with Griffin. Yes, it's a big blow, but if we were going to use him primarily as a winger, we do have cover in that department, especially if, as we all hope, Slav is going to start playing Antonio in his proper position. Having said that, I have no idea what he's going to do tonight, with Masuaku ineligible.

How can you say you aren't bothered Griffin? He's a good player.

I wouldn't call Payet a big money signing.

Re: Andre Ayew Out for 4 months
To be honest, I'm not all that bothered by this. Hard to recognise as he didn't touch the ball, but he started on the right wing. If there's one position in the squad we have a load of cover for its there, and I keep reading on here that antonio is the best winger in the league and has to play there, so not sure why anyone would be too worried

''There's never any point getting excited about our big money signings. They never ever work out for us, and I'm not even exaggerating. When was the last one that wasn't a disappointment?''

Erh, Payet??

This is a huge blow with Ayew, feel sorry for the player first and foremost. Gonna be a long season me thinks, and we don't know yet how the loss of any real home advantage is going to play out.

Thought at the time...fvcking typical. 30mins into his debut. Couldnt make it up. So West Ham.

All hopes resting on Calleri now. Lets hope he provides a pleasant surprise and is the new Gabriel Batistuta.

Re: Andre Ayew Out for 4 months
Lily, it wasn't God Ayew was praying to, it was Allah.

Unless his prayer was "Dear Allah, please give me a serious thigh injury on my debut to put me out of action for 4 months" I think he should consider switching horses.
